​Before you attempt to inspect your room, please take the time and inspect your luggage rack for any signs of bed bugs. Luggage racks are pretty standard in most hotels, if there is no luggage rack available then the bathroom is another great area to place your suitcases. 

Make sure you keep it away from the walls, this limits access points for bed bugs to climb.

Hotel Bed Bug Inspection Tips

1. Where to put your luggage?

  • Your luggage needs to be placed in a safe location until the inspection determines your room in indeed bed bug free.
  • If you have the means, then you can keep your luggage in your vehicle.
  • If you don't have a vehicle then place your luggage on the luggage rack or in the bathtub; it's the next safest place.
  • Keep all luggage, backpacks, and purses closed until you complete the inspection is completed. 

2. Mattress Bed Bug Inspection.

  • Pull back the covers and sheets from one corner of the bed, we start our bed bug inspection at the closes corner where someone will lay thier head.
  • Bed Bugs are visible with a naked eye, use your mobile flashlight to help with the clarity in the areas you are looking.
  • You can find active bed bugs, fecal matter, or blood around the mattress piping, seams, folds, and even tags on the mattress. 
  • Using a credit card can help around the piping or hard folds in the mattress.
  • Just continue to move along the mattress until you reach your starting point.
  • Remove comforters, blankets and any other bed covers. Check the top sheet and bed sheet for bed bugs and stains.

3. Inspect Furniture for Bed Bugs

  • Upholstered furniture, chairs, mirror, luggage rack, headboards, nightstands, and lamps also provide safe cover for bed bugs to rest.
  • Keep a keen eye on folds and seams in the furniture.
  • Bed bugs love tight dark areas, if your flashlight hits a bed bug you can easily see thier movement as they move aware from the bright light.
  • If everything comes up clear, go ahead and unpack. It doesn’t hurt to be cautious, so keep luggage on a rack, closet shelf or somewhere up off the carpet.
